Bloomington Sept 18th 1864
Honl Richard Yates
Governor Illinois
Dear Sir
The Friends of the Union here have long wished to Meet with and hear you talk on the great tho grave questions of the day.
I have made some efforts heretofore to bring about that desirable result but without Success.
We want to have a great Union demonstration here on the 11" of October and desire particularly to have you present as the principal speaker.
There is no one (Since the death of the Laments Lovejoy) in the whole County that the true Union Men here would prefer to have present on that presession to yourself, and I beg of you Governor if it is among possibilities to come. Your presence here will do great goods to the cause, & will not injure you in the back, provided you do not disappoint us after agreeing to come.
The Democrats had a Mass Meeting here yesterday which in Terms of Members & noise was very respectable. Stewart was here during the day. They had speaking again last night and a last light procession. Hoping that I may soon have a favourable reply I remain very truly yours
