Kewanee Oct 26 1864 Gov Richard Yates Springfield Ill Dear Sir Allow me to call your attention to the situation of the 100 day Regiments who so promptly responded to your call in May last. They have been detained over two months over the time for which they volunteered. Some of these have been sadly abused. Some have been mustered out without being payed. No money to go home with. None to pay their board & charged 40 ct per day at Camp Fry to be taken from their pay. In this situation [illegible] & [illegible] their officers take advantage of them [illegible] & get a Power of Atty & swindle them out of what little they should have. They look to you for protection. Some have families
who are suffering for the necessary's of life. Their Husbands & Fathers being detained through the villany or guilty neglect of some Government officials. Will you not look to this matter and see strict justice is done to them without any further delay. The Government would be [illegible] with the noble sons who volunteer to defend her. If [illegible] she expects to have them respond to her calls - Yours Very Respectfully R. Sedgwick
