Dear Sir
I duly received your note of last week with package of your Chicago Speech. In reply, allow me to say, that I am not unmindful of the wisdom and energy which you have manifested in the discharge of the perplexing duties of the Executive office, and which have contributed so much to secure the noble position which Illinois now occupies beside her sister states.
I think you have fairly earned the Sentatorship, and so far as any vote of mine in the coming Legislature, can contribute to the consummation of such a result, it will be freely given. Hoping that hereafter I may have the pleasure of a personal acquaintance, I have the honor to remain
