Chicago Dec. 9th/64
My Dear Gov.
Yesterday morning Mr. Jones, U.S. Marsl, made me a friendly call in my office, to secure any aid in electing Washburne of Galena, U.S. Senator.
I am a prompt & positive (not a negative) man.
I accordingly sd. to him at once, that I was pledged to you for that same office. He further sd. that your friends had represented that all the members of Washburne Disct. were for you, when in fact, no one of them was thus inclined.
I feel in honor bound, not alone from any favors rec.d at yr. hands by myself or my three boys in the Army
but also from my irradicable attachment to you, to notify you at once "of what is in the wind."
Wherever & whenever I can serve you Dick, command me. I shall never fail to "come to thine."
I am most happy to say also that my most excellent partner, Mr. Reed (our present States Att'y) fully agrees with me in all these views and feelings above scripted.
I am, & ever shall be,
Most sincerely & truly
Yr friend
Jos. Knox

Whenever & wherever he can serve you, command him.
His partner, Mr. Reed (State's atty) coincides with his views.
