Chicago Dec. 13. 1864.
Gov. Yates
Dear Sir
The Senatorial question is still canvassed here with considerable spirit. There are parties here who are busying themselves very constantly with the matter. There is a young man who is the son of a member of Congress elect. who is very constantly at-work. He is constantly harping on your intemperate habit - and some one is exagerating the matter
I understand from said young man that there are none of our members who are certain for you but Eastman & Isham. I count on Dalton, but I think that Cook is almost ours to go for Washburn.
I think that there will be fear of a combination against you.
Is there any thing that I can do. if there is I am at your service.
Do you suppose that Genl. Oglesby will be likely to appoint some one in my place. I shall apply for a reappointment
and I can give him any amount of backing.
Something should be done to dry up the said young man he seems to be spending all his efforts against you.
Yours &c.
