Daily Tribune
Railroad, Commercial and General Printing Office.
Chicago, Dec. 15th 1864
His Excellency
Gov. Yates
My Dear Sir,
Yours of Dec. 12th was rec'd last evening. I beg to assure you, that my position as far as I can control it, that of the Tribune, shall be strict and if need be "armed neutrality" in regard to the senatorship. In my absence something squinting one way or the other may get in, but I shall keep all such things out as far as possible.
There is an article this morning quoted in relation to Gen. Palmer as there was one for you & one for Washburne a few days since. There will be one for Logan probably in a day or two. In this regard also, that is the matter of quotations, I will try to keep the scales even.
Very much
& Respectfully
Your Obt. Servt.
Wm. Bross
Bross Gov'r Wm
Chicago Dec 15th 1864.
Yours rec'd. He will do his utmost as he has heretofore to preserve strict and if need be, "Armed Neutrality" in the Tribune, on the Senators Question. In his absence, something squinting one way or the other may get in, but not if he can help it.
They will publish some extracts favoring Palmer & Logan to offset some published in your favor.
