Friend Hirshbach
As the Gov leaves his chair soon and as you as I see by the papers leave soon for the Old Country - I thought I would ask you (as I am now out of the Service having Served three & one half years) what would be the prospect of my getting from the Gov a complimentaty commission as Colonel just for luck. You know I was Major of the 132 Reg Ill Vol (100 days men) & formerly belonged to the 37th Ill. Two or three of my friends have promised to assist me in it & spoke of the matter to me & so I thought I would write you. I suppose it to be a mere form & I think I've earned it. Don't mention this to anyone - I am out of business yet being "under the weather" with a sore throat. Please write me and direct
me Care of Mefsrs D. R. Brant & Co 147 South Water Street Chicago. If you come to Chicago come & see me. Buell joins me in kind regars and congratulations.
Write me & if I can do anything for you command me
Very Truly Your Friend
John H Peck
P. S. I can furnish you recommendations from Gen Herron Col Black & Pickits [illegible] if necessary
John
