I cannot refrain from writing to you at once on the receipt of the intelligence of your election to the U S Senatorship from our State. It gives me [unfeigned?] pleasure to be able to congratulate you on the happy conclusion of our legislature on this point.

We have now a decent Dick to succeed an indecent one in the US Senate

I hoped to be in Springfield but was called here on business important to me

My Wife who is here joins me in Congratulations. We expect to be in Washington about 1st Feb. are you going there this Winter or not
