Hon. Richard Yates
Senator-Elect
My Dear Sir:
Your note of 5 inst. in answer to mine to our mutual friend Judge Kellogg is just received. A day or two after writing my letter to "Pitt" I saw the Chicago Tribune Article on Washburne. Although not familiar with your Illinois politics I had some time before become satisfied that the parties controlling that Journal had a candidate to oppose you, therefore the Washburne pronunciaments did not surprise me. I will not say to you what I said to the Judge concerning the justice of your claim, nor anything as to the universal recognition thereof by the Nation. I will only say that if the result had been different, although the other candidates are all "honorable" men the people of this Country would have been disappointed. Personally I congratulate you with all my heart on your success. and I thank Pitt for laboring for you. He has greatly gratified all his numerous friends hereby doing so.
Respectfully & Faithfully
