HEAD QUARTERS
Quarter-Master General's Department,
Springfield, Illinois, Nov 4 1861.
His Excellency
Richd Yates
Governor
Hond Sir.
Acting as Agent for the collection of warrants for parties living at a distance I commenced with your approval. The services I have performed in that capacity have in no instance interfered with my duties as Chief Clerk, making up at night the time devoted to that business. This morning I have been informally notified by Mr Thomas, Army Auditor, that I "must quit one or the other at once." I do not recognize his right to forbid either, and to forestall any misrepresentation I have to say that if you desire me to cease acting as Agent, your wish is but to be made known and I shall cheerfully comply.
I weighed the matter in all its bearings before I undertook it, and then only with the advice and consent of Govr Wood, and he will readily attest that my duties as Chief Clerk have been faithfully and promptly discharged suffering no detriment on that or other accounts.
Very Respectfully
Your Obt Servant
