Description
Vice President Alden W. Barkley calls for an interruption while giving a speech at the Woodrow Wilson Centennial celebration. Adlai E. Stevenson sits next to him listening to a radio announcement from the President of the United States.
Barkley served in the U.S. House of Representatives (1913-1927) during President Woodrow Wilson's presidency (1913-1921) and the U.S. Senate (1927-1949; 1955-1956) where he held the offices of Senate Majority Leader (1937-1947) and Senate Minority Leader (1947-1949). Barkley considered running for president in 1952 but was thought too old at seventy-four and Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson eventually took the nomination.
