Sir
Having discharged the duties which you assigned me at Cairo, and am about through with my report of the same, I am desirous of entering into more active service, therefor I most respectfully ask that you appoint me Colonel of the first Regt of Artillery which you are about to organize. I am personally acquainted with most of the Officers of Cos A, B, C, D E F & G - have a Brother Lieut in Co E -- and believe that the appointment would give satisfaction to all, as well as Lieut Col Adams & Maj Campbell. I fell that I can discharge the duties of that position, and certainly will put forth my best efforts to do so to your entire satisfaction.
I have the honor to be
