Head Quarters 48th Ills Vols
Camp Cairo Nov 18 1861
Gov Yates
When the 48 Regiment left Camp Butler, Major Sanford then thought his preference would be to remain at Camp Butler and hence tendered his resignation as I have been told – much to my regret – I have also been told that Your Excellency has accepted the same Since these events have transpired the major has written to me and now expresses his regret at having taken these steps, and his desire to Join the 48th in his capacity as major & will at once do so (so he informs me) upon being so ordered by Your Excellency if the acceptance of his resignation can be withdrawn by Your Excellency
Under these circumstances I write to request that the acceptance be withdrawn & the major ordered to Join the 48th at once. This will be satisfactory to myself; the Regiment & also to the major
If Your Excellency desires to be further & fully informed as to the desires of Major Sanford I would suggest that he be sent for and personally consulted. It will afford me great gratification to have him the major of 48th Regt, and I do not now know any man whom I so much desire in that function.
My Regiment is in good condition & retain many pleasant recollections of Your Excellency and the general interest manifested at Springfield for their equipment &c
We need guns badly and hope now that we are removed away from your immediate supervision that we may still rely upon your Excellency to have a general regard for our future welfare
Respectfully
I N Haynie
Col 48th
