Description
John J. Hardin, a prominent resident of Jacksonville, poses for a portrait wearing a military uniform. Hardin represented Morgan County in the General Assembly, fought in the Black Hawk War and Mormon War of Hancock County, served one term in the U.S. House of Representatives (1843-1845), and died fighting in the Mexican-American War at the Battle of Buena Vista on February 23, 1844. A beloved figure, more than fifteen thousand people joined the funeral procession to his burial site in Jacksonville's City Cemetery.
