Description
Large figures of Hyrum Smith (left) and Joseph Smith (right) stand in profile in front of the Temple of Nauvoo built by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Nauvoo in 1836. After the Mormons were forced out of Nauvoo in 1846 due to local hostility and violence, they sold the building in 1848. The building was destroyed by fire and eventually demolished. The church reacquired the plot where the temple once stood in 1937, and built a replica that was completed in 2002.
