Hon J K Duboise
Dr Sir – I trust that I shall be considered neither impertinent nor insane in writing to you.
I am like “all the world and the rest of mankind” soldiering. I am in a Mo. Regt. the 11th Col. Plummer and have now been in the service several months. and while I did not join the army for place, position, or for the purpose of pecuniary gain, I am nevertheless frank to confess, that I have some aspirations, to
occupy a higher position than the one I now fill (3rd Sergeant). My experience in military matters has been pretty considerable. I have had some fine opportunities, to improve my mind in this channel, which I trust have not been altogether neglected. I served in the Mexican war – was in a regular rgt – 7th Inft. and had a good schooling under the best of officers, and during the past few months have (of course) devoted my entire time in that channel.
I wish to get into an Illinois Regt. and can get a transfer if I can thereby
better my condition. Can you do any thing for me?
Perhaps Gov. Yates would do something. Will you write to me.
