To his Excellency

Richard Yates

Governor of the State of Illinois

The undersigned Officers of the United States Forces stationed in Paducah Ky. would take great pleasure in recommending to your Excellency the appointment of Captain Edward T. Wallace of the 11th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers to a position as Field Officer in one of the Volunteer Regiments of the State of Illinois now in the field or organizing.

Captain Wallace is a citizen of the State of Illinois, residing in Cole County, and is anxious to serve among the troops of his own State, being temporarily in Indiana at the time of the breaking out of the Rebellion, he was elected to the position he now holds upon the organization of the 11th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers, serving as such in the campaign of said Regiment in Maryland, and Virginia with credit to himself, and the service; and since the reorganization of the Regiment for service during the war has been stationed in Paducah Ky. The undersigned Officers of this garrison bear willing testimony to the character of Captn Wallace as a soldier, and gentleman, and to his ability as an Officer, and feel confident that an appointment conferred on him by your Excellency is well deserved.

Dear Sir

I can recommend Capt. Wallace as very well qualified to command a Regiment. His experience and his courage and ability can be made more useful at the Head of Regiment than in command of a company
