Dec. 7. 1861
Gov. Richard Yates.
Sir,
I this morning had a very satisfactory interview with Gen. McClelland in regard to the Lake defenses. I had already conferred with the President, the results of which I will communicate more at length, in a few days.
Gen. McClelland, enquired how Illinois troops were armed & if we needed arms. I could only speak of those in Camp Douglas from personal knowledge. But he desired me to ask you to forward
through me a statement, Showing the wants of our troops, & how long since their organization, they had been destitute of arms, & he promised on its receipt to forward arms, & that Illinois should have her full share. They are arriving now, & I understand of excellent quality from [ahaad?]. Hoping to hear from you at an early day I am
Very Truly Yours

arms for our troops.
Judge,
I want a copy of the Report of Troops (which you have furnished) with the number of arms needed to send directly to McClelland got up in the best style. Also one for Arnold Indeed it would pay if a clerk were kept busy for 10 days in getting up copies like the original furnished to send 1 to Lincoln 1 to Cameron, 1 to Chase 1 to Bates & 1 to Blair.
I believe I shall send the one I have to McClelland if you will send me the addendum of arms needed. To ascertain arms needed take the number of troops in camp - and state that when our agent Wolcott returns we will send him description of kind and quality of arms in the hands of soldiers in actual service.
Please return this by bearer as I wish to answer.
