Chicago Ill. Dec 17. 1861
To His Excellency Governor Yates
Sir
I have just learned that the Regiment I formerly commanded has Consolidated with Colonel Baldwins (57”) The 57th to choose their Colonel & the Princeton Regiment to Choose the Major. The Lieutenant Colonel to be appointed by your Excellency. I have had ample opportunity to late to learn the sentiments of the men toward myself & assure you that no objection of any account would now be made to my being placed in Command of them. indeed deputations of the privates have been formally appointed to meet on me to solicit me to take command. I therefore respectfully ask your Excellency in exercising the right of selection voluntary & unqualifiedly given to you by the consolidated Regiment to give me the position as Lieutenant Colonel & this in a measure to me the justice which is universally conceded I ought to claim at your hands.
