Friend Green
I wish to write to you a few lines concerning a matter that I feel some considerable interest in and want you to do what you can for me In the last political Campain Mr Yates told me at Lewistown that anything that he could do for me he would gladly do, and I expect that no persons ever worked harder to secure the election for Gov Yates than my brother S. S. Phelps of Oquaka M Phelps of Lewstown and myself and before this time have asked nothing, but we do at this time aske that Mr Gilurth should receive some consideration on our account. We ask it for the reason that he is worthy of the position and for the reason that we think our family is entitled to something from Gov Yates. Mr Gilwurth wishes the appointment of Major in the army, and I want you to go to Springfield and see Gov Yates on and do what you can for me in the matter and I hope to be able to return the favor as you know I never forget my friends and follow my enemies to the devil.
Yours J R M Phelps.
