My dear Governor
I hope you will not misconstrue my intentions, when I endeavor to keep you posted in regard to the German press. I consider it my duty to advise you concerning some articles which of late have been published by Col. Hecker in the "Illinois Staatszeitung." The Editors of this detestable sheet, who have never pardoned you for daring to oppose their idol N. B. Judd, and who have heretofore most bitterly attacked you, at the same time asking favor of you, have commentend upon Heckers articles in a manner most outrageously unjust to you. You should know your enemies and treat them as such. I have replied to Hecker, who represents me as the cause of his regimental troubles, accusing me of intrigue &c. You, my dear Sir, are aware, how impartially I have endeorvored to settle this "prestiferous" affair,- I know, how good naturedly and patiently you have, in your unbounded generosity of heart, borne with Hecker and his difficulties.- In case Hecker answers to my reply I will see you at Springfield and gather facts for a "finisher." - Let me give you a verbal translation of the comments of the "Staatszeitung:
"We believe that the general administration and particularly the administration at Springfield are responsible for all this. (Heckers regimental troubles)...(And what is the reason, that the Springfield administration should thus treat a man, who ....Sacrificed himself &ce......?) It is unbounded inability on one hand and unbounded meanness on the other.
"At the head of the State of Illinois are two men, one of whom as Governor has brought little honor, the other as Lt Gov. much dishonor upon the State. The former (the Governor) completely ruined by the immoderate use of whiskey and near the gate of that psychical state, called delirium tremens &c............. It is fortunate, that a Covention is now in session at Springfield, which will remove this incompetent Governor and his Stumptail colleague and we doubt not, the people will gladly take this opportunity to condemn these two officers to that political death, which they so richly deserve." - ,
I sign,
with unwavering fidelity,
Your Lieutenat,
F. A. Hoffmann
