On verso: "John Jones came to Alton, Illinois, in 1841 and moved to Chicago in 1845. He was active in the black convention movement at the national level where he met and became a friend to Frederick Douglass. He actively promoted state conventions in 1853 and 1856 and endeavored to establish a suffrage and equal rights organisation after the Civil War.
