THIRTY SEVENTH CONGRESS
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Washington City March 25 1862
Gov. Richard Yates
Dear Sir,
The communication of the Governor of Indiana in regard to the lowering of the dam of the Calumet feeder to the Illinois & Michigan canal has been forwarded to me as the attorney of the Board. I have given the subject much consideration, & believe I can satisfy the Governor of Indiana that Illinois has a legal right to maintain the dam. My brief & papers on the subject are at Chicago. Will you please advise the Gov. Morton that the papers are
referred to me, & ask him to postpone any action until adjournment of Congress, or at least until I could go to Chicago & obtain my papers.
I hope the passage of the bill providing for the enlargement of the canal, & the early completion of the work, making Lake Michigan the feeder, will render this Calumet feeder of little importance. But until this is done, it is of very great importance. Please advise me of reply of Gov. Morton as early as convenient.
Very Truly Yours
