Dear Sir

At the battle of Lexington Mo, I, being a member of the 1st Reg. of Ill. Cav. lost a horse, which I, in common with the other members of the Reg. furnished at my own expense. Being wounded in that battle, I was unfit for service when the Reg. was reformed, but reported myself at St Louis and received my final discharge.

I have tried every means within my knowledge to procure pay for my horse which was appraised at Quincy by Capt. J. C. Davis, at $100.00 (one hundred dollars)

Not being able to receive any

information in regard to the pay, or means of procuring it, from either officers of the Reg. or any other source, I have as a last resource applied to you for information on the subject.
