Illinois State Penitentiary
Commissioner's Office.
Joliet April 17th 1862
Hon Richard Yates
Springfield Ills:
Friend Yates
I arrived here yesterday morning in good order, found Bergen & Powell waiting for me. I found it necessary today to communicate to Powell that it would gratify you if he would resign.
He is very angry and is constantly cursing the State Officers, and proposes when he sees you, to give you a general [raking?] down.
The trouble with him is he will talk before every body making foolish and criminal charges about the State Officers in public barrooms regardless of who may be present. He is thoughtless to a great extent. What effect his language may have upon those who are present. If he was competent and I do not know but what he is. A Quarter Master [lists?] with the new troops, would be
good position for him. If he should resign his position in this Board, appoint some good practical man who is your friend, and you will suit me. I have no person to recommend but will be satisfied in the matter whatever you may do. I hope to be at Springfield in the course of next week
Truly & Fraternally Yours &c
