Pittsburg Landing Tenn. April 20, 1862
To his Excellency Richard Yates Gov of Ill.
Dear Sir.
I have just received a letter from Senator Trumbull of which the following is a copy.
Washington D.C. April 10th 1862
Capt M. S. Littlefield
Co F 14th Regt Ill Vols.
Dear Sir Yours of the 29th ultimo is received. I should be very willing to lend you my aid in obtaining a Captaincy in the Regular Army, as you desire it, but the Secretary of War has published an order that no transfer or promotion will be made from the Volunteers to the Regular Army. This Order precludes all efforts to obtain such change. I hope you were not in any manner injured at the recent battle at Pittsburg Landing. Our Illinoisans, and other Western troops
have gained for themselves great credit in the recent actions in the Department of the West.
Very truly yours
Lyman Trumbull
Therefore it will be unnecessary to proceed any further in the matter we were speaking of. I have been quite unwell since you was here. Thanking your dear Governor for your endeavors in my behalf and hoping that opportunities may occur when I may repay you in full I remain Very Respectfully
Your obedient Servant
M. S. Littlefield
