Moro. Madison Co Ills.
July 26 1862.
Gov Richard Yates
Springfield Ills
Dear Sir
E.H. Burgess Wagon Master in the 9th Regt Ills Volunteers and a personal friend of mine has written me requesting that I should endeavor to get for him the place of Quarter Master in one of the new regiments, and as I believe the appointment is made by yourself I write you concerning it
Mr Burgess I believe will abide the Jeffersonian test of honesty capability and faithfulness to the Constitution He entered the Service last summer leaving a wife and child who are still dependent on him for support. Enlisting as a private he acted first as assistant quartermaster and latterly as wagon master. He is a person of good education: of good business capacity and education; will not steal; and was a working live Republican in '60!
As I make it a rule to ask few favors for myself I feel that you will be able to do something for my friends if I have any claims on your good offices. I hope you will be able to do something for Mr Burgess
Yours for Union and Liberty
