Corinth Miss July 26, 1862
His Excellency
Gov Yates
Sir With this I send you a letter from Genl Buford recommending my promotion as Col. of one of the new Regts.
I am in rect of letters from S B Floyd & Jno M Raum of Golconda Ill who desire respectively to Lt Col. & Maj of one of the new Regts, they are both men of extreme influence and good qualifications & I have no hesitation in saying would make good officers. The Army here is resting upon its arms and will no doubt so remain for two months
I believe I can better serve the Country by raising a new Regt during that time & would like to have Messrs
Floyd & Raum with me.
I therefore respectfully request the appointment. But however it may be with myself, I urge upon your kind consideration their claims for the positions they seek. I feel sure they would reflect honor upon the State & Country.
My recent promotion is a mark of your Confidence for which I shall ever feel grateful
I have the honor to be
