Gov Yates
Sir
Yours of the 23rd was received with pleasure. I was sorry to lern that you had not the power to grant my request I should like very much to get a transfer to the regular army But as I cannot I feel disposed to try something else When the call was first mad for volunteers I tryed to be first in the field I left my aged parents alone I was there youngest son and the only one that was at home I had one of two duties to preform Remain at home and care for my parents or answer to the call of my country I chose the latter And after fifteen months experiance I have no cause to regret my choice In my own estamation I expect
I have bin a tolerable good soldier I have passed through two of the hardest Battles that have bin fought in the west and done my part with the rest I know it is my duty to serve my country all I can and I intend to do so as long as my servis is required I stil hope to become a regular and my plan for being placed in that Branch of the servis is to procure a commission in some of the companies which are now being formed for the three years servis As I have had fifteen months experiance I hope you wil have the power and deem it prudent to grant my request Hopeing that this may meet with your approval I now close
I hope to hear from you very soon
I remain your Obedient servt
