Head Quarters 8th Mo Infantry

Memphis Tenn. August 18th 1862

Sir

Understanding that it is the wish of a great many citizens of Peoria County, that Capt David P. Grier of my Regiment, should be appointed and transferred, to the command of a Regiment organizing there; I take pleasure in bearing witness to his worth, and feel convinced, that the Service would be greatly benefitted by his appointment, as he has been tried in every way since he joined us with his company, and in every instance acquitted himself to the entire satisfaction of every one.

I should be highly pleased at the appointment of Capt Grier to the command of a Regiment, and can safely say that he will be a credit to the Service, and to the patriotic State of Illinois.

Very Respectfully

Giles A. Smith

Col 8th Mo Infantry

His Excellency
