Hon. R. Yates
Sir: Pardon the liberty but the strict sense of justice and unerring judgment you have evinced led me to hope that could you know the merits of John A. Bross he might attain a command suiting his capacity and aspiration. Anxious to serve his country he has already recruited one company now at Dixon under Captain [McGrore?] and is now raising another at Chicago.
With a military mind, he has studied to prepare himself before offering his services. Have you not a position he might fill with honor to himself and our country – and I can assure you no act of his will ever cause you to regret your kindness.
Unknown to him a wifes ardent desires must be an apology for this intrusion
Heaven bless you for the assistance you have already rendered our glorious union. Hoping this may merit your approbation. Very Respectfully Mrs. Jno A. Bross
