Sir:
Enclosed I forward to you four letters addressed to his Excellency Gov. Yates in my behalf, by Genls. Grant & Oglesby and Col's Webster & Brayman, Endorsing my application for a commission as Colonel of an Illinois Regiment.
Having had many years experience in Civil life in managing large bodies of men I feel confident that with this and my Military Experience of a year in the field I should do no discredit to the service; and would if the Governor should honor me with his favor Endeavor to equal if not excel those noble sons of Illinois who have been honored with similar Commands and won the brightest laurels in the field.
