The officers of the 37th Regt of Illinois Volunteers Respectfuly ask to be immediately transfered from this district to active service before the enemy either East or South.
Having borne the brunt of battle in Pea Ridge and at other times honorably acquitting ourselves before the enemy and having been thanked by Maj Gen Pope in a special order for the rapidity of our movements and being possessed of courage and disipline - qualities essential to success, which we are anxious to devote to our country's cause, and, which cannot be here for the want of an opportunity is one reason
Secondary to this desire is the unpleasant relation existing between the officers and those of the State of Missouri under which we are serving. It is such as will lead to perfect demoralization and the loss of all our effectiveness and the loss of all the aid we might render to our country.
If this cannot be done we ask to be brigaded and a United States Brig Gen of Vols place in command.
That confidence may be restored and justice done to the officers
We refer your excellency to Maj Gen Pope Brig Gen White and Jeff C. Davis or to Maj Gen Curtis and A. A. G. Jno C Kelton Washington.
