Honorable Sir
I once more intrude on your over taxed time. I enclose in this a letter from my Brothers of the 39th. it came to hand to late for the purpose he speaks of in raising a company but I knew it was in your power to appoint other offices I would send it although I suppose it would be better to have a recommend from some of the officeers My husband says he knows they can that is either one of my brothers can. for they are both good soldiers. & have natural ability to hold any regimental office. so I hope & trust to your discretion that somthing may be
done for one of them at least for I think at least the service needs experienced commanders.
I received your circular showing what a situation my husband might procure for which I am very thankful & he would have excepted if his Physical ability were such as would permit or he would go back to his old company a private but I know that he cannot stand to much exposure & a soldier's life demands hardihood I have one more favor to ask at your hands & that is could you not procure a situation in the state either in Chicago Springfield or Cairo at A place in the commissary department or quartermaster for he has had some experience in them for when his health got to poor to be on duty he was detailed to the commissary till he got down sick
& when he got better he was in the sanitary department & could have staid only for some predjudice of his [own?]. when I saw him this morning start out to hard labor in the harvest field with a pain in his side I felt that this government was ungrateful in the extreme that a man could go & serve the goverment nine or ten months go through every hardship as you are aware Shields division did. & then when they are no longer fit for duty discharge them without making any provision for them or their family it look like base ingratitude to me & to you I look for some situation for my husband for I feel sure that you believe in rewarding merit please do all in your power for me, & I will forever bless you
Yours truly
