Lane Ogle Co. Sept. 1st 1862
Hon. Richard Yates
The Secty will hand this to Gov. Yates -
Respected Sir -
You will excuse me if I address you again By your circular I was requested to do all I could for the cause &c &c I have spent all my money and all my time since Aug 1st. without a commission though through Dr Lyman of Rockford my name was placed on the books as a Recruiting Officer from Ogle Co -
I have gone to work and Secured the enlistment of more than 20 men for Capt Burroughs Company of Sharp Shooters, Chicago - If my commission had come I should have had a full company from Lane besides the one raised by
Capt. Brice.-
Gov. Evans had spoken [well?] of me to you Sir & you said that if you could do any thing for me you would do it - You may think strange that I do not go into this company here. there are two reasons for not doing so - I have been here only two or three months - & on the election these men Said that they would have none but a working man for any office the position of Adj't of the Regt. to be formed from Ogle & Stephenson - You have 2500 men from our county and we have no officer above Capt - If you can do nothing for me please send me pass to go to Ohio where I am known - Is it not strange that
one must leave his adopted State to get into the service of his country?-
From what I learn the people of Ogle Co feel the Sting of neglect deeply - The blame is placed on another gentleman & our noble Gov. is free -
With much respect I am Yours truly
