Albion Edwards Co Ills
September 8th 1862
Hon. Jesse K Dubois
Springfield
Ills
Dear Sir
Capt. H. Hopkins who will hand you this, is a resident of this place, and last fall raised a company of Cavalry in this Co. and went to Kansas and entered the U.S. Military Service – and now belong to the Kansas 2d Regt. He wrote to the Govener before he went to Kansas - and never recd. an answer – and being anxious to get into the Service was tempted to go to Kansas under some representations made by a man representing himself to be duly authorized to recruit for Kansas, his name was Col. Pomeroy. The Captain and his entire Company are anxious to be regarded as Ills soldiers and under the Superintendence of Gov. Yates. If you can do anything for them have the kindness to act in the premises, as we all desire their accommodation.
Yours truly
W. L. Mayo
