We the undersigned officers of the Army of the united States Volunteers from a long and intimate Acquaintance wtih Captain Jno. W. Meacham now commanding Company (I), of the 14th Regiment of Illinois Infantry. Knowing him for a very eficient and competent Captain would beg leave to call your attention to the merits of this officer in your appointments of Officers for the new Regiments now being formed in Illinois or in filling Vacancies that may occur in the old whilst we would exceeding regret to loose the services and society of Captain Meacham Yet we would be infinitely Gratified to see him made a Major or Lt Col, higher than which he does not Aspire
