Head Quarters Springfield Ills
Sept 11th 1862.
His Excellency Richard Yates
Sir
Lt Christie a member of my Staff has been for some days drilling the 123rd Ill Infantry Vols at Decatur He reports that he requires of the officers and men a diligence and perseverance only limited by their physical Capacities, and that both are making remarkable progress
He mentions an evil, however, that needs to be Corrected the great number of leaves of absence, and furloughs granted to officers and men.
If the Regiment is still under your control, a prohibitory order would be expedient - if not, with your approbation, I will address Col Tupper on the subject
G John A Mc Clernand
