Jackson Tenn Jany 2 1863
Governor Yates
Sir
Last evening a courier arrived bringing us the good news that Gen Sullivan, who left Trenton a few days since, with a force of some 5,000, met the rebel Col Forrest, with a force of 8,000, yesterday morning, 30 miles N.E. from Jackson -- fought him 4 hours, & whiped him severely
Gen Sullivan took 2 Cols, 2 A.D.C.s, 300 prisoners, 800 stand of armes, 300 Horses & 6 pieces Artillery. The rebel Col Napier was Killed. Col Remicker of the 122 Ills, was wounded -- our loss slight. Other particulars not [illegible]. I start for the battle field with necessaries for the wounded this morning. I will forward particulars on my return.
I enclose Gen Grants order in reference to the disgraceful surrender of Holly Springs by Col Murphy of the 8th Wis. -- showing the deep mortification of our Commanding Gen. On Tuesday 30th Dec, I sent by courier to Columbus, a report of the previous week. We are yet without a mail or papers -- 17th Dec being the last. We hope by
Monday next communication with Columbus will be opened, & that we will get our back mail. All quiet in Jackson.
Respectfully Your Obt Sert
