Jacksonville, Jan. 7th, 1863.
Hon R. Yates
Dear Sir, my only apology for asking you (in the multitude of your pressing engagements) to forward this document for us, is first because I know Col. Hall is one of your firm friends, & secondly with your endorsement I feel assured it will receive the consideration to which it is justly entitled. You know best the direction it should take to insure success.
Permit me to add, in no "matter of course" way that I heartily endorse your "message". Will it be printed in Pamphlet form? If so I want to take all I can for distribution in the Army - will gladly pay for them. I feel especially glad of your allusion to a "Soldier's Home", you may remember that we talked of this among the sick & wounded at "Shiloh", and it has frequently been a theme in camp life. Follow it up. They wont have the heart to deny you, & the gratitude of faithful yet friendly thousands will reward you. You could not ask a more fitting monument than the "Soldiers Home"
Truly Your's
