May 20th 1863
To his Excellency Richard Yates. Governor of Illinois
Dear Sir
I wrote to you a few days ago (During your absence) asking you to have me transferred to the Marine Hospital Chicago it being the nearest my home in Illinois. And I am happy to say that I received an answer from our Excellent Lieut Governor, stating that a transfer could not be made unless there were 40 or more applicants. And I learn from our Surgeon here that they must have certificates proving that they have been off of duty and under treatment for three months. I have a certificate from our Regimental Surgeon which is approved by O. B. Payne
our Division Surgeon showing that I have been under treatment since the First of February. For Organic Disease of the Liver. Hemorhage of the Peretoneal sack & Dropsey. The Surgeon here calls it the same and thinks it doubtfull about Me getting well, Under these circumstances I think it is not right or justice to keep me 3 months more here waiting till a sufficient number can be had to transfer. Therefore I as a Husband and a father make this appeal to your excellency and humbly beg you to use your power and influence to get me transfered, or furloughed, or anything else to Ill, where my wife and child can visit me. I do not expect to ever be able for duty,or work, and the only pleasure I ever expect to have is the enjoyment of my wife and daughter. If there is help for the Widow's son, with all confidence in your excellency, knowing your willingness and abilities to promote the
interest and welfare of your troops I close feeling assured that my request will not be passed unheeded or uncared for.
I am Fraternally your
Humble Servant

Wrote a few days ago asking to be transferred to the Marine Hospital Chicago. Was informed that the transfer could not be made in squads less than 40. Says he will never be fit for duty again - and earnestly requests that he may be transferred.
