as a Father I appeal to you in behalf of my Son that is now Confined in Nashville Prison Tenn. for a Crime that I as his Father feel in my heart he could not be guilty of that is of being a mail Robber. I have recd. a letter from him dated the 24th of last month stating the case as it [occured?] [illegible] he had mailed a letter to me enclosing six months pay and a report haveing Come to the Camp that the previous mail had been Captured by the Rebels he foolishly formed the Idea of takeing his letter out of the bag which he admits he done for which he was Court martialed and sentenced to serve the balance of his time in Prison which I believe is two years & two months
he belongs to the 100 Hundreth Illinois Regt. Co. B. Capt. Elwood. I have myself served in the Army of the Potomac a Commissioned Officer in the 1st Penna. Artillery and passed through some of its hardest scenes. he has also suffered from severe wounds having previous to this occurance been in Hospital five months. therefore Dear Governor have Compassion on his Youth and again restore him without disgrace to his Regiment as he was not aware of the enormity of the act he committee and I will ever pray
