Morris K. Jesup. John S. Kennedy. John Crerar. Office of M. K. Jesup & Compy 44 Exchange Place New York, 3d Decmber 1863
Honble Richd Yates Springfield Ill: Dear Sir I make no apology for now troubling you as I feel satisfied that you will approve my purpose and aid me in it all you can. -- My Cousin, Mr. Alexander Kennedy has just come out from England with a view to tender his services to the Federal Government and I am desirous to obtain a line from you to the President in his favour in order to enable him to gain ready access to the War department. -- If you knew him as I do you would not hesitate to recommend him in every possible way for he is entirely deserving of confidence. -- He has been for nearly two years connected with the Volunteers in England, in one of whose most efficient corps he holds the
commission of senior Captain -- he learned his duties however in the regular army having been specially attached for that purpose to the 29th regiment; and on field days always acted as Major. -- I would like to see him placed on the staff of one of our Generals if possible, and will feel gratified if you will bring your influence to bear in his favour.
He purposes going to Washington in a few days, I will therefore be greatly obliged by your sending me a line in his favour as early as you conveniently can.
I am Dear Sir
Yours truly John S. Kennedy.
