Promissory note of Isaac Lindsay to Abraham Lincoln

Description

Abrham Lincoln completes a promissory note on behalf of Isaac Lindsay who signs the note promising to pay Lincoln $600 at 10% annual interest. On the reverse side of the note is a detailed record of Lindsay's repayment of the debt which began prior to the Lincoln-Douglas debates and lasted through much of Lincoln's presidency. The record from August 1857 until August 1860 are in Lincoln's hand. From September 1861 until May 1864 the notations are in the hand of Robert Irwin, a surrogate for Lincoln.
