Before Entering the Normal University I again applied to Mr. Herndon - His answer:
Springfield Ills. April 23 1859
Mr. Grigsby - Dear Sir:
Your Excellent and most Eloquent letter is at hand, and has been for some time/ but the press of business prevented me from answering it sooner. You are quite philisophic in your reflections, and we cannot answer your very kind letter otherwise than in a Kindred Spirit. We really desire your welfare and prosperity, and hope that you may leap into business with all your might & Energy. We are sorry that we have no room now for a student: we have one reading with us at this moment, and cannot make room, at present, for an other - At some time we may take you - not now.
