Messr W. S. Douglas & Bro.
I have received a letter from Mr. Leland of Boston, dated Septr 18th 1860; and in which he says that he will settle with you on the terms you first proposed - . The first proposition was made to Mr Leland by letter signed by S. Christy, and dated about June the 4th 1856.
Mr Leland says he is not authorized to do more. By that letter you were to give up possession & title to the land on the 1st of March AD 1862. You were to pay taxes for 3 years, and give to Leland all the improvements on the land - made or to be made.
Gentlemen,
a pecuniary crisis is upon us and probably you had better accept now Lelands acceptance of your own proposition.
This is a matter however for you to think about. Please write to me and say what you will do - nothing less and nothing more. Leland has gone as far as he intends to go. Taking into consideration the pecuniary crisis which is now in our midst, bankrupting us, I think you had better compromis on the terms you first offered through Mr Christy. Answer quickly
Yours Truly
