Dear Sir
Excuse my delay in acknowledging yr favor of 19th inst: Long rehearsals and ill health have prevented an earlier response. I remember yr play very well, and remember too how well I liked it, but I am afraid there will be little---if any opportunity to produce it at the [Belmont?]. Managers of theatres arrange their season’s programme months in advance---and [Mr Clark?] [who?] attends to all the [housewife?] affairs of the theatre, has---I presume---filled all the weeks for his next season---as the present one was planned and disposed of months ere it began.
He may, possibly, have a week or two [unprovided?] for---in which case he can produce anything that he approves of---of this, however, I know nothing. He is at present absent from the city---when he arrives I will consult him on the subject & see what can be done. Do I make myself understood?
The only liesure time I have is between 4 and 6 o’clk---during which I shall be happy to see you any day.
To avoid disappointment---should you call---do not ask for me, but merely send in your card---as I am [obliged?] to keep myself ‘under lock and key’, as it were, for every
'Tom, Dick and Harry' that make [unimportant?] calls upon me, and my servants are [excessively?] stupid.
I am sorry I cannot call on you & save you the trouble.
In haste –
Very truly Yours
Edwin Booth
