My dear Sir:

Mr. Barrett is in England. I have not seen him since we conversed together, and I doubt if he ever recd a letter I directed to New Orleans- relative to his purchasing [yr.?] play.

[1 or 2 sentences sliced out]

Being obliged now to travel far & work hard & make up the losses of one little day, which – “at one fell swoop” – deprived me of a theatre & the result of long & painful labor.

I wish I could advise you in regard to the

“Artist” – but know not what to say. Edwin Adams & Chas Barren are the only two young men who are likely to need new plays. Barrett now being engaged with [Boucicault?] to perform such characters as he shall write for him & I daresay (like myself) he has his hands full.

Sincerely hoping for a change to brighter days – I am

Very truly

yours

E. Booth
