My dear Mr. Miller: Referring to your letter of August 19th, to which I sent you a partial reply on August 28th, & send this to repeat substantially what I then wrote you.
I find on referring to my copy that the little Scripps biography was merely a campaign pamphlet of 32 octavo pages, having the simple title "Life of Abraham Lincoln," the title occupying only about one-sixth of the first page of the pamphlet. Two-thirds of the last page were covered by the advertise
ment of the various campaign documents of 1860 printed for sale by the Chicago Press and Tribune. The pamphlet had no cover. It was got up for cheap circulation, being sold at the rate of $2.50 per hundred, or twenty dollars a thousand. It was copyrighted in 1860 by the Chicago Press and Tribune Co.
