My Dear Governor
Permit me to call your attention to the application of our mutual friend J. R. Webber for the office of provost marshal for this district. I see by reading the conscriptions bill which has recently passed Congress that such officers are to be appointed. Whatever you can do for Mr. W. will be duly appreciated by your many friends in this region.
I presume ere this you have learned the
death of our dear friend Newport, poor fellow, he died without hardly a moments warning last Tuesday morning. We have lost one of best citizen an honest man, and a true patriot.
Yours as ever
W. T. Hopkins
